Prevent Diabetes With Bitter Coffee

Coffee may lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Substances in coffee may help regulate glucose levels in the blood, and hence, also diabetes go away. It is based on research conducted by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The risk of diabetes can be reduced through the consumption of coffee is diabetes mellitus type-2 (DM type-2). This type of diabetes is most prevalent, the number is around 90-95% of the total of all people with diabetes including type 1.

Type 2 diabetes usually affects adults, although sometimes children can also have it. If type 1 diabetes is usually obtained as a congenital abnormality, diabetes type 2 more often caused by an unhealthy lifestyle.

On this type of diabetes, the body's ability to process sugar is reduced or even no work at all so that blood sugar levels to accumulate. Compilation of these disorders are quite diverse, ranging from kidney failure, retinal damage and impotence in men.

Coffee benefits in reducing the risk of diabetes is already known for a long time, although the exact mechanism is unknown.

According to the researchers, there are at least 3 content of naturally occurring compounds contained in coffee and efficacious in reducing the risk of diabetes, namely caffeine itself, kafeat acid and chlorogenic acid.

From the research, study participants who drank 5 cups of coffee a day had fewer internal inflammation (a risk factor for diabetes type 2) than those who drank no coffee.

According to a report in the journal, coffee can increase the concentration of adiponectin, a protein in the body that helps regulate glucose. The researchers speculate that the drink is less than five cups a day may also be beneficial, although more study is needed to support the findings. "At least, these are preliminary findings that carry clues about the benefits of coffee for the prevention of diabetes," the cover of the report.

20 previous studies conducted worldwide show that coffee reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by 50 percent. The researchers suspect the cause is chlorogenic acid in coffee act to slow the absorption of sugar in the digestive tract. Chlorogenic acid also stimulates the formation of GLP-1, a chemical that increases insulin (a hormone that regulates glucose uptake into cells). Other substances in coffee that is trigonelin (pro vitamin B3) is also thought to help slow the absorption of glucose.

This is not the first study on the benefits of coffee. Previous research shows, coffee is also beneficial for the prevention of the formation of kidney stones, colon cancer, Parkinson's disease, liver damage (cirrhosis), heart disease, and prevent cognitive decline in brain power.

Research also consistently shows that coffee reduces the risk of liver cancer and breast cancer. Coffee also protects the liver from cirrhosis, especially cirrhosis due to alcoholism.

Coffee is also suspected to reduce the risk of stroke. A study of more than 83 thousand women over the age of 24 years showed those who drank two to three cups of coffee a day had a stroke risk 19 percent lower than those who drank no coffee. Studies of a number of men in Finland showed similar results.

Study of 4197 women and 2820 men in France showed that drinking at least three cups of coffee a day can prevent decline in cognitive function due to aging of the brain up to 33 percent in women. However, similar benefits are not found in men. This may be because women are more sensitive to caffeine

Effects of Drinking Coffee

There were similar risk reductions for decaf coffee drinkers and tea drinkers. But the researchers cautioned that data from some of the smaller studies they reviewed may be less reliable.

Coffee also contains minerals such as magnesium and chromium, which help the body use the hormone insulin, which controls blood sugar (glucose). In type 2 diabetes, the body loses its ability to use insulin and regulate blood sugar effectively. [Read: Prevent Diabetes With Bitter Coffee ]

Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee appear to provide similar amounts of antioxidants.

Coffee may counter several risk factors for heart attack and stroke.

“For Parkinson’s disease, the data have always been very consistent: higher consumption of coffee is associated with decreased risk of Parkinson’s,” Hu tells WebMD. That seems to be due to caffeine, though exactly how that works isn't clear, Hu notes.

Drinking 3-5 cups of coffee daily were 65% less likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, compared with nondrinkers or occasional coffee drinkers.

The evidence of a cancer protection effect of coffee is weaker than that for type 2 diabetes.

“All of the studies have shown that high coffee consumption is associated with decreased risk of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Again, a research shows a possible association, but like most studies on coffee and health, does not show cause and effect.

Pregnancy

Pregnant women who drink many cups of coffee daily may be at greater risk for miscarriage than non-drinkers or moderate drinkers. Again, it's not clear whether the coffee was responsible for that.

Both regular and decaffeinated coffee contain acids that can make heartburn worse.

Coffee drinkers who also imbibe in alcohol have been known to have a lower risk of cirrhosis to the liver
